A FREE ACTIVITY AND MY WAY OF GIVING THANKS.
Benefitting the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo Patricia Allen Recovery Wing.
If you just want the activity and instructions you can scroll past my story.
The activity is free. but, I wanted to do more.
The back story.
On November 8th, 2020, following a Bills victory over the Seattle Seahawks, fans learned that quarterback Josh Allen decided to play the game, even though he had just learned of the passing of his grandmother, Patricia Allen. As a show of support and love, fans immediately began donating to his charity of choice, the Children's Hospital of Buffalo in $17 increments (Allen’s Jersey number).
Almost immediately, the story went viral (half a billion views), and within a week, Bills fans had donated more than $1 million dollars. Thanks to their generosity, The Patricia Allen Fund Pediatric Recovery Wing was the designee and the fifty year old facility was reimagined and rebuilt to provide ongoing support for families dealing with pediatric cancer.
Why this charity? Why now?
It’s NOT because I love the Buffalo Bills (although I do). Nor is it because I love the idea that their fans donated a million dollars in $17 increments (Josh’s jersey number) to honor his grandmother.
My brother and I at final birthday together.
It’s because it’s personal.
I have a connection to this particular hospital and wing.
Children’s Hospital of Buffalo is where my twin brother Todd was treated for, and lost his battle with Childhood Leukemia. He passed away fifty years ago, and I wanted to do something to honor his memory in an ongoing and meaningful way.
So, during this Holiday season, for every new Patron ($17), the proceeds to the Patricia Allen Pediatric Recovery Wing.
To be clear, for each new Patron…
I WILL DONATE $34.00 TO THE PATRICIA ALLEN RECOVERY WING AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF BUFFALO.
You get all of the benefits of being a Patron, and the knowledge that your money was matched
and donated to children and families in the most dire of circumstances.
I’m not doing this to get more Patrons. I am doing this for me.
And, by involving you, I not only get to increase my contribution, but also give something to you.
YOUR THANKSGIVING activity
As a music educator, you give so much to your students, school, and community. Your impact is as profound as it is long-lasting. But, we also receive a lot. Packed performances, adorring students, and involved parents. Not every teacher is so lucky.
This activity is designed to shine a spotlight on those who rarely feel it’s warmth, and show your colleagues how much they are appreciated, even if we don’t always show it.
I did not know at the time, the activity would mean as much to me as it did to the other teachers.
